All photos, text & tables © Hilton Pond Center

Of more than 76,000 birds banded since 1982 at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, only 46 had been reported as found dead or recaptured and released away from the Center but within our home county of York. This is an extremely low rate of only about 0.06%.

On the table below, birds highlighted in GREEN were retrapped and released by other banders (or hand-caught by other persons); those in BLACK were found dead; and those in RED were killed by cats. The majority are birds that congregate at backyard feeders and are more likely to be encountered by observers. All 11 Mourning Dove encounters were shot legally and reported during hunting season.

NOTE: If you encounter a banded bird, please report it to the U.S. Bird Banding Laboratory. Your discovery may lead to our learning something new and important about bird migration, longevity, site fidelity, or general population dynamics.

AGE KEY

  • L = Local (bird hatched locally and was banded as nestling, or as recent fledgling incapable of sustained flight)
  • HY = Hatch Year (bird hatched in current year)
  • AHY = After Hatch Year (bird hatched in a previous but unknown year)
  • 2Y = Second Year (bird hatched in preceding year)
  • A2Y = After Second Year (bird hatched not in preceding year but sometime prior to that; follow same formula for A3Y, A4Y, etc.)
  • U = Unknown (bird's age could not be determined; usually used in fall when HY birds are indistinguishable from adults)
