What's That Purple Flower?

The photo above, taken at Hilton Pond Center, shows a purple flower that is relatively obscure. The bloom is a quarter-inch across and is borne on a plant 2-3 feet tall. Many folks won't recognize the flower, but it produces a seed that almost everyone has encountered.

Take a close look at the photo and see if you can identify the plant or at least figure out what family it's in. If you can't name the blossom from memory, use a wildflower field guide.

When you think you know the answer (or if you just don't know or give up really quickly), click on its photo above to go to a full description of this interesting--but somewhat pesky--purple flower.
